Five Month Update

I have no idea why this post was blank but hey, I'm finally posting something now (six months later). Ta da! A post!

Timesinks are Growing

The garden is rolling right along and we're just getting in a few tomatoes and "pickles." The zucchini and okra stalled and will probably never produce and the onions all died. On the other hand, we pulled up a bag full of new potatoes and garlic. The yellow squash are doing great (which defies every previous year we've tried to grow them) and the eggplants are coming right along.

Our walking timesink has even more teeth than ever (all the better to bite his daddy's hands with) and has recently discovered he can climb. No couch is safe. He's a regular dynamo of fun (and I mean that in the best possible way).

more gardening junk

I don't think we're going to be able to cram any more plants into any garden bed. Yesterday's addition of six more pots of okra and two more eggplants have pretty much eaten up any remaining space. I think that makes an even dozen pepper plants, about 20 okra, and four eggplants (two of which are struggling to survive). Now if only we can keep them all alive and someone's tiny hands away from them we should have a good harvest.

The asparagus crowns we planted are taking a very long time to sprout. Only five or six have put out shoots out of the 15-20 that we planted. I would have thought that 3-4 weeks to sprout is abnormal but I'll give them a little more time.

Garden Time

Here's a list of what's been planted in the past few days: eight tomatoes, 11 pepper plants, onions, four rows of corn, and about 15-20 asparagus crown. And we still have to finish digging out a metric ton of dirt so the new garden box can be filled in with useful soil.

Once that's all dug out and filled back in we can get around to planting all our zucchini, cucumbers, cantaloupe, and watermelon. Too bad it's been raining so much these last few weeks. I'm sure the bluebonnets appreciate it but I could use some dry weather to finish.

Time Goes By

Almost five months have passed since my last update and a few changes have happened. First our little timesink is walking and almost running which means he really wears out his mommy and daddy now. And secondly, the official tooth count is up to eight but he still prefers most foods in puree form.

His first birthday in January was a real mixed bag: he liked being around all the folks but he caught a nasty cold the night before. He was definitely not feeling well but still tried to play like a champ. He didn't dive right into his cake like I would have thought but then we never gave him many sweets before this and he rarely ate anything with his hands. We have since made up for that oversight. He was enjoying a taste of Swiss truffles just last night.

Linda is home with him playing mom since she was laid off from her job and both of them are thriving because of it. It's wonderful watching those two play together.

All three of us are busy prepping the garden boxes for the spring planting. I'm going a bit crazy waiting for the weather to warm up and dry out a little bit. All our local shops have their spring plants in stock and I have my seeds ready to go but Mother Nature isn't cooperating with my insanity. Our little timesink helps out by taste testing all the dirt. I think he's trying to find out where to make the best mud pies when he's older.
